Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)/Concussion
A TBI is brain dysfunction secondary to brain injury. The term mild brain injury is often used synonymously with concussion. Some individuals with TBI, even with relatively mild brain injuries can have long term affects that can affect their quality of life. At UNC, we specialize in and are passionate about making the diagnosis and treating traumatic brain injuries. Dr. Asad is one of very few Neurologists in Northeast Florida to be Board Certified in Brain Injury Medicine.
Alzheimer’s and Memory Disorders
Alzheimer’s Disease/Dementia is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that begins with mild memory loss and progresses over time. While there is no cure for Alzheimer’s, we provide our patients with advanced treatment options to slow the progression of the disease and maintaining a longer, better quality of life.
Neuromuscular Disease/ Movement Disorders
Movement disorders is a subspecialty in Neurology dealing with conditions like tremors and Parkinson disease. We not only provide pharmacologic treatment for movement disorders, but also work with Neurosurgery to implant deep brain stimulators which we then program for long term control of the conditions.
Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system in which the immune system attacks the brain and spinal cord resulting in areas of damage and inflammation. Epilepsy or recurrent seizures may occur as a result of a genetic disorder or an acquired brain injury, such as a trauma or stroke. We perform EEGs as well as ambulatory (long term) EEGs which are interpreted by one of our triple board certified Epileptologists. In addition to pharmacologic management of Epilepsy, we also refer patients for VNG placement and can program VNGs for better control of seizures.
While an acute stroke is a neurological emergency which should be diagnosed and treated in an emergency room and a hospital setting, we help provide post stroke care and can help with identifying and managing stroke risks to prevent future strokes. We can also guide optimal stroke rehab.
